a reaction bite. In the heat of summer focus on deeper cuts, pools, current breaks and anywhere with significant cover. Tossing small topwater baits, a small frog and the ever fish catching wacky-rigged Senko.

SLOUGHS, BACKWATERS AND OXBOWS

The Delta guys know all about sloughs, backwater and oxbows – the truth is these features are not unique to Delta waters. The Sacramento, Feather, Mokelumne, and San Joaquin rivers and others have all kinds of habitat containing bass.

I fondly remember fishing a backwater choked with vegetation when weedless frogs came out in like the ‘80s. Sometimes you can get to these spots in a river boat, sometimes by kayak or even float tube – just depends on where you can access.

The sky is the limit on how to fish – it just depends on the features of each site, and they can fish quite differently. I know plenty of backwater spots up and down the Sacramento River above Colusa and similarly on the Feather River that are a blast to fish (and you can smash the occasional stripers too).
