What are the main differences between the HDS
Gen2 and Gen3 units? I read about the Gen3 having
the ability to run the StructureScan ® 3D; but I’m not
convinced that the 3D is really that important.

I believe that StructureScan® 3D really is a BIG DEAL! Especially when you take the time to learn what the unit is showing you on the bottom of the lake. Other advantages to a Gen3 unit over a Gen2 unit would be the built in CHIRP Broadband Sonar, wireless capability, improved screen technology and faster processor for quicker navigation through the menus and when changing pages.
Another thing to consider is the fact that the Gen3 is the current model and Lowrance is still producing free updates for that line. The Gen2 is likely not going to get any more updates to the software that runs the unit. These are just a few options to consider when looking at where to spend you’re hard earned money. Do your homework and figure out what is the best option for you.

I recently upgraded my electronics to HDS Gen3 units from the first HDS unit that came out. Can I plug my LSS-1 directly into my HDS Gen3 unit?

Yes, you can plug the LSS-1 into the back of the HDS Gen3; but you will need a converter cable, so the Gen3 can accept the LSS-1 cable. Remember that the black box that the Gen1 Keypad Models needed is not used with the Gen3 units.

the detail that the LSS-2 will. Save your money and upgrade to the LSS-2 as soon as you can and the performance will exceed what you have experienced on the first generation of StructureScan®.
To get the most out of Lowrance StructureScan®, upgrade to Lowrance Structure Scan® 3D. The LSS- 2 has three elements or crystals in it and the 3D transducer has nine crystals in it; so the coverage area is expanded and the receiver is improved to capture the data to give you much more detail of a larger area.
The 3D transducer will still give you Down, Left and Right views just like the LSS-1 and LSS-2 did. But when you put all three views together in a seamless view of the bottom, it is like nothing you have seen before in any marine electronics unit.
