Bow HDS Settings. Setup the Bow HDS to use its internal antenna for “GPS Data” but keep the Point-1 for “Heading Data.” Follow the same settings process as outlined above under console unit settings, but this time select GPS data source to come from only the bow unit (not the Point-1). As mentioned above, remember to add the Heading Extension blue line to extend from your boat position on the screen.
Since I sometimes use my bow HDS to save a waypoint, I program the GPS data source to obtain its GPS data from its internal antenna. I also want the bow HDS to get GPS data from the internal antenna so that waypoints are displayed on my screen in the proper location from where I am standing (not 20 feet behind me).
Whenever I save a waypoint from the bow by using my cursor (sonar or StructureScan) I make sure I am using the local transducer. I have a LSS-1 transducer and my 2D sonar transducer on my trolling motor. By the time you read this article, both will be
changed to a single SpotLightScan transducer on my trolling motor.
Each time I save a waypoint from the bow I am recording my bow HDS unit’s GPS location, while viewing my trolling motor transducers. If I am at the bow on the electric motor, and I am returning to a waypoint previously saved by my console unit, this setup allows me to accurately find the waypoint using the GPS location of my bow HDS GPS antenna. Very accurate!
Conclusion. Using this combination allows me to get the full advantage and accuracy of using the external GPS antenna for waypoint marking on my console, and using my internal GPS antenna/receiver for accuracy at the bow. No matter which HDS unit I am viewing when returning to a waypoint, I will get as close as possible (both direction and distance) without having added error for the distance between the GPS antenna/receivers.
