On his spinning outfits, Dobyns uses the Daiwa Certate, Procyon and Excellor reels in the 2500 size with 8 lb P-Line fluorocarbon. Casting outfits carry the Daiwa Tatula with 10 to 12 lb CXX P-Line or 55 lb braid for pitching into heavy cover.

“I always believe when fishing the nail-weighted Senko on spinning gear with lighter line that it’s really important to have the right rod-reel-and line,” Dobyns said. “We’re using this rig somewhat as a finesse technique and the right rod will help detect light bites and pressure bites.

“When switching to casting gear and heavier line, I believe there is a wider margin and it depends on the cover and the angler. Some anglers like a softer tip and lighter action. Some anglers, like myself, like the soft tip but quick power and backbone. I get great hook penetration, but then I can pull them away from cover.”

DROPSHOT

Ehrler often uses the Thin Senko and Pro Senko (5- and a 6.75-inch sizes) for this finesse rig. The former has a slender profile end-to-end, whereas

the latter has a thicker head, which allows more rigging room for a worm hook. Despite their design differences, both present slim figures that wiggle with minimal action.

“The Pro Senko is my choice for traditional dropshot orientation, either nose-hooked or Texas- rigged,” Ehrler said. “But for wacky rigging a dropshot bait, I find that the Thin Senko works best.”

With either bait Ehrler dropshots with a 7 ft, medium-action Daiwa Steez AGS spinning rod. Reduced weight, thanks to carbon fiber guides, means more sensitivity – a distinct dropshot advantage.

Ehrler closes with this note: “I like a larger spinning reel for the fish-fighting leverage it gives me, along with the ability to take up more line with each turn of the handle. I’ll fill the spool with 12 lb Sunline SX braid and use a modified Albright knot to connect an 8 lb Sunline FC Sniper fluorocarbon leader.”

For these and any Senko application, rod/reel/ line choice may vary with personal preference. Consider Dobyns’ and Ehrler’s insight when making your decisions and you’ll find an outfit that works for you.
