and an 8 lb Sunline fluorocarbon leader.
This outfit promotes the right presentation, while also equipping Ehrler for effective hook sets.
“In my experience, a sharp, snappy set can work against you because it can jerk your line across the fish’s teeth and break the leader,” Ehrler notes. “To avoid this, I use a more controlled hook set. When I feel the bite, I reel down and pull. This usually hooks the fish just fine and I don’t have any worry of a damaged leader.”
NAIL WEIGHTING
“I use the nail-weighted Senko just about everywhere,” Dobyns says. “I fish it from a foot to 50 feet deep. I use it in spotted and smallmouth bass fisheries, as well as largemouth fisheries.”
His favorite outfit:
The Dobyns DX 743 SF,
a very fast action rod
with plenty of power to
ensure good hookups in
deep water. Dobyns said
that some anglers drop
down to his Champion
702 SF or 703 SF model
and many use a DX 742
SF. But for his preference,
the DX 743 SF offers
better power and length.
“If I’m fishing shallow
or on a body of water with
really big fish or heavy
cover, I’ll go with a casting
rod,” Dobyns said. “For
pitching a nail-weighted
Senko to docks, reeds, and
grass lines and to any visible cover, I prefer a Champion 735C. Our most popular rods for this are the Champion 733C and 734C but I like the faster and more powerful 735C.”
