electronics in big boat bass tournaments. He has carried his Lowrance unit over to his kayak and is already seeing success in his first season on the competitive kayak bass fishing tournament trails.
“The reasons why I choose Lowrance is because it is very user friendly and it comes with the best down and side scan images,” he said. “With the new FishReveal update, I feel like fishing has been made easier for me.
“I choose the Elite-7 with TotalScan for my Hobie Pro Angler 12, it’s a perfect match. With the Lowrance Ready feature on the kayak, everything was plug and play. The Elite-7 is not too small and it’s not an over-kill for my kayak. The Elite-7 with TotalScan comes with the high/low transducer.” Yang pairs his Lowrance with the BerleyPro transducer mount for protection.
“I used a 1.5-inch Ram Mount to secure my Lowrance on the Hobie H-rail,” he said. “Using the Lowrance Elite-7 Ti has transformed the way I fish. I can find hidden under water structures and fish them thoroughly.
“When fishing is tough, the new FishReveal is the key to locating fish that are hiding. I honestly believe that I am a better fisherman today because of the help of the TotalScan and FishReveal features.”
KAYAK ORG TOURNEY DIRECTOR
Brigham Vang, Tournament Director for the Central Valley Kayak Fishing Trail and competitive tournament angler also weighed in.

Chart-plotting, CHRIP Traditional and DownScan imaging capabilities, makes for clean and clear imaging,” he said. “The touch screen user interface makes it user-friendly when adjusting, setting or navigating through different windows.
“With the recent software updates from Lowrance (FishReveal and Genesis Live), it has made locating and distinguishing fish hidden in structure a breeze. Genesis Live gives me the ability to record extreme detail in real time with a one-half to two-feet contour line as a map overlay.
The Ti series that Vang runs is powered by an on board 12v 9ah battery with a run time of 10-12 hours.
The Ti series combo with the HDI transducer makes for a perfect fish finder for any kayak. The HDI transducer is compact enough to fit in most kayak hull transducer cavities. The Ti head unit is also compatible with the TotalScan transducer in case an angler would want to upgrade to side imaging features.
“The top-notch performance and features allow me to break down offshore structure more thoroughly, graph fish more efficiently and eliminate variables to be a more efficient angler whether I’m pre-fishing or tournament fishing,” added Vang.
TOP-10 GAME CHANGER
With 11 top-ten finishes out of the 13 tournaments he has fished with his Lowrance unit, Damian Thao is a force to be reckoned with on any body of water.
“I use a Lowrance Elite-5 Ti with TotalScan,” said Thao. “Before making the purchase, I did some research and received positive feedback from friends with the Elite series. The touchscreen really had me sold at the price range. This feature allows me to scroll back and drop waypoints on fish quickly just by swiping the screen.
Thao has his Lowrance unit mounted on a Ram Mount quick release bracket and the transducer mounted on my Wilderness Systems Flex Pod.
“The unit has really changed my way of fishing,” said Thao. “You can find fish offshore where they are untouched, allowing me to fish new waters and new techniques. It’s an eye opener to see how many fish are in the lake, when you start fishing offshore ledges and island tops which the Navionics chip on my Lowrance Elite-5 Ti allows me to do.”
Like these three kayak anglers have shown, adding a Lowrance unit to your fishing kayak can increase your chances at successfully locating and catching more fish. •
