I

n addition to the new anglers entering the sport,

there are many experienced big boat bass anglers

that are making the transition to kayak fishing looking for something different.

There are several competitive circuits to fish in California

to include: Yak-A-Bass Nor-Cal Series (YAB), California Kayak

Bass Fishing (KBF), Central Valley Kayak Fishing (CVKF) and

the MKA Motherlode Series.

Tournaments are now frequently exceeding 100

competitors per event. As the competition grows, anglers are

looking for every edge to increase their chances. The kayaks

are becoming mini bass boats with all the customizations

and features that anglers are adding.

KAYAK TECH

One of the most important

additions for today’s kayaks is

electronics. The technology has

increased exponentially over the years

and now there are some cost effective,

high-quality units that fit nicely on a

kayak.

They provide the angler the ability

to locate fish when they otherwise

would be fishing blind. The ability to locate underwater structure, depth changes, contours, and channels can give the angler the edge they are looking for.

The GPS and mapping features allow them to locate and mark productive areas and provide them the ability to get right back to their spot-on gameday. I interviewed three competitive tournament anglers from California who have employed Lowrance units in their fishing arsenal and are seeing great success as a result.
