QUESTION #3
What is the best setting for StructureScan and
can the sensitivity be adjusted on Structure can?
ANSWER #3
When you adjust the Contrast setting on Lowrance Structure Scan, you are adjusting the Sensitivity of the picture. As far as the best settings, the default settings are good to start with.
You can adjust the Contrast to find the crisp clarity of the bottom based on current conditions; but one change I always make is to change the Palette from the default color of “light tan” to the blue color.
This is at the bottom of the color choices on the drop down menu. To my eye, there is better separation of targets like rocks and ledges when you change to the blue color.
ANSWER #4
To upgrade from your HDS-5 keypad units to any of the newer HDS Touch units, there will be no need the change the power cable or the Broadband Sonar transducer. The blue connector transducers and the power cables will plug right into the new HDS Touch units. The only thing you will need to change is the mounting bracket.
If you have your HDS-5’s networked, these network cables will work too. The only changes you would need to make are if you have StructureScan on your HDS-5’s. The HDS-5’s would have had the LSS- 1 box and transducer connected to the units via an Ethernet cable.
The new HDS Touch units are better matched up with at least the LSS-2 transducer. If you get HDS Gen3 units, then consider the StructureScan 3D, as it is a considerable upgrade. It is more money; but well worth the investment, if you are serious about structure fishing.
QUESTION #4
I have two HDS-5’s on my boat. Can I replace these older HDS units with newer, upgraded models and simply plug the new ones in when I get them?

QUESTION #5
I have an HDS-5 Gen1 that I use for navigation only. Recently it got to where it would take a long time to start up. My friend told me that if I re-boot the unit, it might clean up some stuff and help. How do I do the re-boot or re-set of an HDS-5?”
ANSWER #5
There are two different resets you can do to your HDS unit. One is a “soft” reset and the other is a “hard” reset.
Before you try to reset you units, make sure you have the latest software update from the Lowrance website in your unit.
Then look at how many trails you have saved on your unit. If they are long, delete all unnecessary trails. This space being freed up will aid in how the unit gets everything going. It won’t need to read all those trails, which slow down the start up.
The soft reset will not delete any Waypoints or Trails that you may have saved on your unit; but any Overlay Data will need to be reinstalled onto each page, where it is needed.
