units. The older ones will work fine, but the newer ones are better.
You can get an HDI transducer for added sonar
views. With this transducer you will have traditional
Broadband sonar you had with your PDT/WBL, puck
transducer that you broke the ears off of and you will
have DownScan from the Lowrance StructureScan
sonar. This transducer will plug directly into the back
of your HDS Touch unit.
If Broadband sonar is all you need up front, get a
new puck transducer for your trolling motor which is
the PDT model. I run an aluminum transducer shield
protector on my personal trolling motor transducer
to protect my ‘ducer from rocks. The model is SSC-2.

QUESTION #2
My electronics were due for a serious upgrade; so I purchased two HDS-7 Gen3 Touch units. I got the smaller screen size, because I’m watching my budget. Now I am wondering if I made the right choice, after looking at the HDS-9 Gen3 Touch unit. I’m wondering if I should have gotten one HDS-9 Gen3, instead of the two HDS-7 Gen3 models and placed it at the bow or console. Which way should I go?
ANSWER #2
Since you are budget conscious, you made the correct choice with the two Gen3 7-inch units. You also gave yourself the opportunity to add to your set up later when you save some more money.
I would recommend placing one HDS-7 Touch at the console and one at the bow.
WINTER 2017
Then after you save up some money in your fishing budget, purchase a new HDS-9 Touch that you have been looking at and move your 7-inch Touch at the console up to the bow (next to the one that you will already have there) and place the HDS-9 touch at the console, in place of the 7 touch that you moved up front.
My reasoning for this is since you are only a couple of feet away from the unit mounted at the console, you can split the screens for looking at Chart, Sonar and StructureScan (if you have the LSS-2 transducer) and view the smaller panes very easily on the 9-inch screen.
Then with the two HDS-7 Gen3 Touch units up front, you can use one for a Sonar unit and the second one as a dedicated Chart unit. When you fish up on the front deck, you are normally 6- to 7-feet away from the units when you glance at them.
With each 7-inch screen dedicated to a particular view, it is easier to see the detail on the screen. There is an added benefit of redundancy having an extra unit on the boat, just in case your buddy misses a hook set with a heavy tungsten weight and it hits one of the screens smashing it. You will still have at least one unit up front and one at the console. Hey, anything can happen right?
