QUESTION #4

I’m thinking

of getting the

Structure Scan,

but I’m afraid of spending all that

money and not being able to

understand what I’m seeing. Is it

worth it?

ANSWER #4

Time on the water looking at the Structure Scan sonar picture is the best teacher. Especially, if you can go to a lake with very clear water and can see 15 or 20-feet deep. Idle over known structure, rocks, trees or brush and look at the sonar picture that shows up. The unit will show up the same every time. One thing to do is go over that known structure from different angles because the same tree will look different every time. This will help you learn how to interpret the sonar picture.

For example,

a standing tree

in the water

will show up as

a light colored

stripe going

up and out to

the side of the

screen on Left

and/or Right Scan. Behind the tree will be a dark stripe that looks like a shadow. This “shadow” is created because the sonar ping that hit the tree did not hit the lake bottom behind the tree. Any part of the bottom that no sonar ping bounces off will show up as black.

The stronger the sonar return the brighter the sonar picture will be. The softer the bottom or if the bottom angles away from the transducer, the darker the object will be. On Downscan the tree it will look like a tree on the screen, very easy to understand.

QUESTION #5

How do I get the temperature to display on my HDS Touch units that are networked together?

ANSWER #5

First, hit the PAGES icon. Tap SETTINGS and then tap NETWORK. Now hit DATA SOURCES and then tap SONAR. Here, is where you will find WATER TEMPERATURE.

When you tap WATER TEMPERATURE, look to the menu on the right side of the screen and find SCOPE. The default setting for SCOPE is GLOBAL. This means the unit will use any device in the whole boat, meaning “global” to find the desired setting. You will want to tap SCOPE and this will change the setting to LOCAL. The “local” setting means the unit will only use the devices that are plugged into this unit - Local, not the whole boat, Global.
