Rod, Reel and line ChoiCes

Everyone has their preferred rod and reel brand and just about any casting setup will work, but the key factors for me are a longer rod and faster speed reel. I have evolved my choices throughout the years and my current setup is my favorite yet. A 7’7” MH Powell Endurance rod and a Shimano Chronarch CI4+ reel with a 7.6:1 gear ratio. I have been using the 7’7” rod this football season and am amazed at how much farther I can cast and how much easier it is to set the hook compared to the 7 foot rod I have used in the past. The high-speed reel is another fairly new addition and I like the ability to quickly pick up slack

For many people, football season is about watching grown men tackle each other while you are drinking a beer. For me it is a time to catch big bass with football head jigs.

when a fish starts swimming with my jig. When selecting line, it is always 15-lb fluorocarbon for me. I like Seaguar AbrazX, because it doesn’t fray in the rocks as much and if you are not fishing around objects that cause abrasion, you are not always fishing the right places.

The double tail grub is about as good as you can get for football jigs. I have a variety of colors and sizes of the 5” Yamamoto Double Tail Grubs as well as the Berkley Havoc “The Deuce”. Both of them work very well, the Yamamoto version has more colors and more salt, but the Havoc baits are much more durable and also half as much money for a pack.
