TIMING: TARGET THE TIDES FOR PUNCHIN BASS

LOW TIDE: During low tide, focus on deeper mats located near channels or drop-offs. These areas become more accessible as the tide recedes.

HIGH TIDE: As the water level rises, bass move into shallower, flooded vegetation. Concentrate on areas where mats are submerged, offering bass ambush points to attract bass that are actively feeding in the newly flooded areas.

BITE WINDOWS: The best bites often occur during the transition periods when the tide is changing. Bass are more likely to be active during these times.

Tide Tip: Toss the bait hard enough to penetrate the mat and fall naturally Once the bait penetrates through the mat and hits the bottom, give it a couple of shakes to mimic a struggling prey. If no takers, try raising the bait it hits the mat and shake it near the mat as opposed to near the ground.

Mat Tip: Not all mats are created equally. Look for mats that have healthy vegetation You may even see bubbling or movement, indicating active bass beneath.

COLOR SELECTIONS FOR THE CONDITIONS

A few of our favorite or best-selling punch plastics were listed, but overall, for any plastic here are a couple more suggestions based on water clarity.

In stained or dirty water darker colors such as Black and Blue, Junebug or Hematoma.

In slightly stained water Okeechobee Craw, or Green Pumpkin/Blue can stand out

In clearer water, more natural colors such as Green Pumpkin, Cali 420 or Watermelon Red are a go-to.

On sunny days, a Black/Red Flake, Tilapia or California Love may shine through the light.

HOOKS: Straight-shank 4/0 – 5/0 flipping hook, such as the River2Sea New Jack Hook. The New Jack Hook can be tied with the traditional Snell, or it can also be rigged by running the line through the top eyelet and tying any other knot to the secondary line-tie. When it’s rigged using the secondary line-tie, the River2Sea “Ish Monroe” New Jack Flippin Hook still produces that unique cantilever or kick action that the Snell knot provides. The New Jack Hook design also keeps weights from repeatedly banging against your knot, and to top it all off, the secondary line-tie acts as a bait keeper to lock your soft plastics in place. •
