Yet, the use of a topwater is actually not just designed to actually hook fish – Ehrler most often uses it just to get a reaction.
“A lot of time, the fish will just show himself,” says Ehrler. “He may come up and miss it, especially if he’s coming up from 20-feet, or he’ll be curious and follow it. Either way, once he shows himself, I know where he is. I’ll watch and see where he’s going, and I can quickly catch him with a follow-up presentation.”

So, there are plenty of topwaters out there. Where do you start?
“For me, a Lucky Craft Gunfish is my all-time
favorite,” says Ehrler. “You can make
some really long casts and work
it fast to really cover water. Plus,
that back-and-forth action really
prompts reactions.”
