I

t’s hard to beat throwing a topwater, and for many,

if they could do it all day long and catch fish, they

would. So, what if Brent Ehrler told you that was a real possibility in the summer? To use a topwater the

majority or even all day long and catch fish? And not just

catch a couple fish, but a lot.

That might get your attention, right? Well, it’s a reality.

It just takes a little bait-and-switch tactic to do it.

“It’s a simple, two-pronged approach,” says Ehrler. “Part

one is a topwater and part two is a follow-up lure. It’s one

of my favorite things to do.”

THE WHY

Summer bass can be notoriously finicky, especially as the summer wears on and the fishing pressure gets to them. That’s where having a technique where you can quickly cover water and catch both active and moderately active fish is a boon. And that’s exactly what Ehrler does with this technique.

Topwaters have a unique ability to catch active fish, and by simply committing to it, Ehrler will invariably catch fish, be it burning the bank or even over 20-feet of water in the clear lakes near his house in California.
