Keitech’s Swing Impact Fat 3.8 in Rainbow Shad
FINESSE SWIMBAITS
While the big glide baits, line-thrus and Basstrix style lures get the most attention from
serious swimbaiters and trophy hunters, the Keitech Fat Swing Impact and its brethren have
increasingly grabbed a piece of the pie in recent years. If you’re only throwing the 4.8 and 5.8
models, though, you’re missing the boat.
There was a period last year where in just about every pro’s boat I entered I found a 2.8 to 3.8 inch model on a ball head or finesse swimbait head rigged and ready to go. If you don’t like spinning
tackle, or grinding out limits, it may not excite you.
Likewise, on the Delta or at Guntersville, it’s not an obvious choice. Nevertheless, when times get tough, and bites are in short supply, a Fat Swing Impact, Rage Swimmer, or other bait from this
class elicits valuable bites.

Rapala DT4 (Dives-To) in Ike’s Demon
DT
The past quarter century has spawned
plenty of crankbaits for the luremakers’ hall of
fame, everything from hard-charging square
bills like the RC 1.5 and KVD 1.5, all the way to
ultra-deep divers like the 10XD, but it’s those
“in-between” baits that often work best when
fish aren’t ultra-shallow or super-deep.
Rapala already had one “best in class”
model in its ubiquitous Shad Rap, but the DT4 and DT6 have produced lots of victories without
getting much ink.
They’ve been a major player in two of
the last five Bassmaster Classic winners’
catches, and I’m told that after Ott won on the
Tennessee River, it was tough to find them
in the “Demon” color just about anywhere.
Still, they don’t get the attention they deserve,
except by the devoted adherents who already
know how good they are. •
