GET FOLLOWERS TO COMMIT
One of the most frustrating things with throwing big glide baits is followers who do not strike the bait. Brown reads the fish and says that each fish will give you a clue based on how far away from the bait they are.
“When the water is warm, the bass are active and come up and study the bait,” he said. “If you are getting fish to come up within a few inches from the bait that is when you need to pause or give it a quick twitch to let it glide.”
For fish following the bait at a distance of 5- to 8-feet, Brown says to cast further and give it a more aggressive action.
“That is your clue. I’ll make the crazy action and pause to let it glide further from side to

side,” he
said. “If that doesn’t work, the fish are likely to bite later in the day, if you come back.”
If you are not getting any followers at all, Brown says to “keep chucking” until you find them.
“I also pay attention to my sonar, because even though you don’t see the fish, you may see streaks coming up as you bring the bait out of the water,” he said. “This happens often in off-colored water and is usually when I switch to a weighted model.”
DETECTING BITES
One would think that a giant bass eating a large lure would mean a vicious strike, but Brown has learned over the years that that is rarely the case.
“The fish are coming in the same speed as the bait and a lot of times you just feel a little tick,” he said. “When you feel that you need to set immediately.”
BAIT MODIFICATIONS
Butch Brown is a noted bait modifier and customizes each of his baits as well as those of friends and even those who purchased the bait bearing his name.
“They are fine right out of the package, but I make little tweaks to the bait to get different action out of them,” he said. “I have some that sink much deeper and some that are better up near the surface almost like a wake bait.”
