SUMMER 2015

ELECTRONICS

Electronics and mapping software such as Navionics SonarCharts are a standard for locating fish.

Using technology such as Navionics mapping software is key to ensuring that anglers plan out their fishing locations before ever hitting the water. The mapping software also helps with navigating at night and avoiding underwater islands and other obstacles.

“Using the Navionics WebApp on my iPad or iPhone helps me understand the contour lines and locate key fishing holding spots,” said Lain. Lain accesses the information he gathers while researching key spots via the Navionics WebApp using his Lowrance HDS 12.

PRECAUTIONS

There are several precautions anglers should take before setting out for their first night fishing trip. Make sure your navigational lights are working properly. Law requires anglers fishing from a boat at night

to have properly functioning

navigational lights. Many anglers tape a piece of black electrical tape over their back navigational light to cut down on the glare. “My ranger Z520c has the new recessed running lights and LED lights throughout the boat, but I still make sure that I carry spare bulbs and flashlights just in case one goes out,” said Lain.

Another suggestion from Lain is to make a checklist of things you will need. This includes items such as two flashlights, a good pair of needle-nose pliers to un-hook the treble hooks from those wake baits and topwater baits, plenty of insect repellant and ice cold drinks to stay hydrated.
