I

n this issue, i would like to talk about low- rance’s new mapping tool. it is called insight Genesis. i like the thought of recording my own sonar readings of lakes and specific areas i fish and having the ability to create maps with up to 1-foot contour lines. as most of you out there will agree, the mapping that is available commer- cially does a pretty good job of showing the major structure and bottom contour of the bottom of the body of water you fish but the structure on the structure is missing. These are the smaller points or rock piles that the USGS mapping does not take into consideration when they do their general survey of an area. i’ll bet most of you will agree with me that you have waypoints on structure that you have found while fishing that does not show up on the preloaded mapping or third party map- ping cards you may have purchased and put in your electronics.

of that point. The third party map card i had in my lowrance unit at the time did not show this point at all. The contour lines just paralleled the bank in a nondescript manner not disclosing the fact that there was any bottom feature at all let alone the 30-yard long point extending out from shore. With insight Genesis this hidden point will be on my personal map that i created and loaded onto my own Sd card. one of the best features is that this map is encrypted and will only work in my lowrance units. if someone gets their hands on my map card, it won’t read in their unit so my hard work finding and mapping my areas and structure features where i catch fish is protected. insight Genesis gives you the opportunity to do your own personal survey of the lake’s actual bottom contour where you fish and get a customized contour map of that sonar survey.

i would like to tell you a short story to let you know how computer savvy i am, or in this case i’m not. My laptop i use is a Macbook, but to use the insight Genesis website you need to have a Windows operating system. i went to my local computer store and bought a new laptop with Windows on it. i got home and tried for a week to learn how to use Windows 8. Windows 8 was way beyond my computer abilities; so i returned the new laptop and found one online with Windows 7 on it. everything is fine now. The reason i tell this story is to set the stage that an old guy who can’t figure out how to

For example, there are places where the bank looks fairly straight for a couple hundred yards, but when you use your sonar and mentally “map” the bottom out from that straight bank as you are fishing along, you may notice an underwater point that extends out into the lake. one such point in particular i found has a patch of rocks on the end where the point drops from about 15-feet into over 35-feet. The hidden point gets very little pressure and in an FlW Pro/am i caught a 9.2-pound largemouth off
