WB: Okay now, tell us how you got started in kayak bassin’.

Silva: I’ve competed in many tournament circuits, including Bass Angler Magazine, Yak-a-Bass, and the Yak-a-Bass Gambler series, among others. My dad and grandfather first got me started fishing when I was maybe two or three-years-old. I learned to fish for trout on the McCloud River near Lake Shasta using salmon eggs and Powerbait. As a teenager my dad would take me to Lake Sonoma on his boat and he even taught me how to drop-shot which was my first

real bass fishing technique. I spent a handful of years fishing from a float tube and eventually picked up a motorized kayak

WB: Tell us your tips for springtime bass.

Silva: Spring is a time of year when many anglers shy away from their electronics. However, I’ve found that you can utilize LiveScope and mapping to find and target fish heading to spawning areas. Before I hit the water, I choose areas on Navionics mapping that have shallow water flats at the back of larger coves.
