Abu Garcia is one of the most respected brands of rods and reels around. Every year, they continue to add new products with new technologies designed to make fishing gear lighter, stronger, and in general, better than ever. For 2020, they unveiled new reels, re-designed rods, and added several combos.
THE WORLD’S LIGHTEST SPINNING REEL – THE ABU GARCIA ZENON
In the baitcast world, there are plenty of extremely lightweight reels on the market. By nature, spinning reels are heavier than baitcast reels, but the new Zenon comes in at an amazing weight under five-ounces.
It is a premium model (with a matching $500 price tag) but weighs just 4.9-ounces for the Size 20 version and 5.4-ounces for the Size 30.
To reduce weight, they thought of everything and eliminated empty spaces, made the parts smaller. Saving weight was a big part of the design, but the performance was not sacrificed.
It features an excellent drag system and what Abu calls a Hybrid Rocket Turbine Spool. There is also a spare shallow spool included with purchase.
THE NEW MAX LINEUP
This lineup of reels and combos has a big emphasis on affordability. The reels include the new Max X, Max STX and Max PRO. They fit where the Black, Silver, and Pro Max reels were previously in the Abu lineup.
Even though they are a “budget reel,” they have plenty of big features like a lightweight frame and the Rocket Line Management for the spinning models.
They also include spincast reels with consistent drags and smooth retrieve and the Quadcast pickup system for ease of use and better casting.
Both the spinning and spincast models are also available in combos. They are paired with a matching rod and the spincast combos come pre-spooled with Berkley Trilene XL.

THE ZATA LOW PROFILE REEL
This was a Bassmaster Classic release, a new Abu Garcia baitcaster with a fresh look and 11 ball bearings and a Duragear brass gear. It also has a lube port for easy access for maintenance.
The spinning version has the same look and great features. It is made to be reliable, light, and durable.
Both are offered in a combo with a 24-ton graphite rod with Winn grips.
