While the Dream Shot accounts for the majority of his fall dropshotting, Meyer also will mix up his presentations for different scenarios.
“I’ll throw the Strike King Half Shell, which is more of a finesse bait, if the fish are on small baitfish like pond smelt,” he said. “Also, I’ve been using the Strike King Z2. It’s a big fluke style bait that’s a big smallmouth deal up north, but it’s also effective out west. I like to nose hook that one on a 1/0 hook.”
TOPWATER TERROR
“”Early fall, a topwater is one of my favorite baits; again, something in a shad imitating pattern,” Meyer said. “”I’ll use either a buzzbait or what I like to throw a lot is a Strike King Sexy Dog.
“That’s going to do two things - you’re going to cover a lot of water, but you’re also going to find a lot of fish. You’re going to pull fish up and you’re going to find areas where they’re living. Once you do that, you can go back through with something like a dropshot.””
As for proper retrieve, Meyer says a steady walk-the-dog action works well in warmer water. In cooler conditions, he likes to put on more of a convincing show.
“”I’ll walk it, and then stop, make one or two twitches, then walk it a little more,” Meyer said. “It’s all about the water temp and how fish are reacting. If you’re on a herring lake, you’re going to have to walk it really fast; but, you just have to see what the fish like and how they’re reacting.”
