GO-TO TECHNIQUES

Kaneko revealed that he liked many types of techniques and wasn’t sure he could narrow it down to just one fave.

“I guess I would say, I am not really a finesse guy,” he said. “I like flippin and throwin’ reaction. I like a lot of different kinds – swimbaits, ChatterBaits, swim jigs and spinnerbaits; but, I also like to throw topwater – frogs and buzzbaits.”

FISHING FAVES

While he enjoys a trip to Clear Lake, Kaneko’s heart stays with his home water on the California Delta.

“I like Clear Lake because it is more like the Delta; but I really love fishing shallow grass over deep dropshotting,” he said. “And, that is the kind of fishing you can do at the Delta; so, that is why I like to fish it more than lakes.”

FISHING GOALS

When asked about his day- to-day goals for fishing, Kaneko desires to be consistent.

“I would always rather be fishing good enough to get a limit, rather than lucking in to a 10-pounder,” he said. “I would

rather keep finishing in the top-5, than win just one tournament. Being consistent is one important thing for sponsorships.”

It appears Kaneko’s plans for consistency in the youth circuits is already paying off as he already has a head start on obtaining sponsors, sporting a list of brands that he represents.

“My dad and Tom and Mark Daniels Jr. turned me on to sponsorships and what I should be doing to earn them,” said Kaneko. “I started getting sponsors once I was tournament fishing, had a social media and wrote resumes to share my accomplishments.”

His sponsor list includes Megabass, Eco Pro Tungsten, Seaguar, Rod Glove and Johnny C’s California Reservoir Lures.

ADVICE TO OTHER TEENS

Kaneko’s suggestions for those starting out was to begin with only a few techniques.

“You cannot fish everything at once; so, start with one thing and then build your arsenal,” he said. “From there, start studying. Learn how the bass react to the conditions, the weather and the types of environment. I use maps, the internet and YouTube. If you do this, I think you will start to prosper.” •
