“I was pretty excited about the day; but I tried to stay humble,” Kaneko recalled. “I didn’t want to over-exaggerate or celebrate; because I knew how tough it could be.”
The final day was more challenging, and the team slipped to 33rd. – a very respectable finish against the large field. “We caught a lot of fish; but they were all little ones on the second day,” he added. “I think because they opened the dam and the current wasn’t running on Day Two, it really effected our bite and that hurt us the most.”
This year’s events weren’t the only youth events that Kaneko has excelled in. In 2016, he earned four victories at the TBF High School Tournament or Opens on the California Delta and one at Lake McClure. In 2017, he claimed TBF High School Tournament or Open wins at Pine Flat, Folsom and twice at the Delta. He was the Junior Angler of the Year (AOY) in both years. In addition to he and his partner’s first place finish this year at the Clear Lake FLW High State Championship, Kaneko also fished his way to first at two other TBF High School Tournaments on the California Delta.
FOR FUTURE
The journey to Pickwick, practice and competition only increased Kaneko’s interest in a professional bass fishing career. “Fishing all those days, it was definitely a beatdown; but there is nothing I would rather do than fish,” said Kaneko. “I do hope to be a pro angler. I hope to go to college and major in business or marketing to enhance my fishing career
with promotion for
sponsors.”
He noted his
parents are supportive
in the career choice;
however, have advised
him to get a “good job”
before he embarks on
the venture – “unless
he has sponsors lined
up”.
“They are all
about it; but they
do want me to go to
college and get some
money,” he said. “I
am fortunate to have
parents that support
me like that.”
