Patterns for Fall Bass Catching by Glenn Walker

Three Ways to Catch Fall Bass

SPINNERBAITING OVER VEGETATION AND LAYDOWNS

There is just something about the feel of the blades vibrating in the water that just makes an angler want to toss a spinnerbait in the fall. Burning the bait back to the boat quickly, then stopping it to let it flutter down, often triggers bass into biting. Slow rolling on the bottom is another popular way to provoke a bass strike.

Water depth, current and wind will dictate the weight of a spinnerbait in each scenario. I use anywhere from a ¼-ounce all the way up to a ½-ounce War Eagle spinnerbait.

If the water clarity is pretty good, I’ll use a shad patterned bait with a Colorado/willow leaf blade combination. If the water clarity worsens, I’ll move to an all-white or white/chartreuse-colored bait with a single Colorado or an Indiana/Colorado blade combination.

I use a Witch Doctor Tackle Surman50G 7’2”, medium-heavy rod. The half fiberglass, half graphite

combination delivers a medium-fast action, which results in increased hook ups!

I spool my Victory II low-speed gear ratio casting reel up with either 15-pound Seaguar InvizX Fluorocarbon or 15-pound Rippin’ Mono, depending on the water depth and cover I’m fishing.

Go-To Location:

I like to fish a spinnerbait over sunken pad stems, parallel to weed points or crawled over laydowns. The spinnerbait does a great job mimicking the baitfish that the bass are feeding on; so, it is a logical choice.

I keep in my wind direction. Many times, the side of the lake that has the wind blowing into it is a great place to begin your search for bass during the fall, as the wind will be pushing warmer water into the shallows, along with food.

Keep that boat hooked up and ready to hit the water this fall as you don’t want to miss out on some of the best bass fishing of the season!
