When you connect to an
existing hot and ground source,
you don’t really know how many
devices are already using that
wire and if you overload the
carrying capacity of that wire
many kinds of failure can result.
I like to recommend leaving
the existing wiring alone relying
on the engineers at the boat
manufacturer to have designed
the wiring harness to do its job
without any problems. I feel
they size the wire to the load
intended and connected to
those wires. I don’t want to add
more load to that wire. I feel it is
prudent to run dedicated wire
to run your new electronics
to avoid any unnecessary
problems later.
Dual Bow Mount Dual Dash Mount
QUESTION #3
I just bought a new Ranger Z series boat. What is the best method to mount my Lowrance HDS units on my boat? I have seen them flush mounted; but at the console, the steering wheel blocks some of the lower part of the screen and I don’t like that. Solutions?”
ANSWER #3
The historical method was to get a RAM mount and place the units off to the side of the windshield. I recently purchased a new Ranger Z521C with flush mounted Lowrance HDS-12 Gen3’s at the console and at the bow. I had the same issue with the steering wheel blocking the lower 1/3 of the screen. I didn’t like that either.
The solution I found to be the best is getting a Bass Boat Technologies dash mount. There are lots of choices on the bassboattech.com website; but the one for the Ranger boat I purchased was perfect.

When I removed the flush mounted Gen3 there was a hole in the dash cover. The Bass Boat Technologies dash mount that comes for the Z521C fits the same screw hole pattern as the stock cover. All you do is remove the star head screws in the Ranger dash cover, remove the cover and the new Bass Boat Technologies mount fits the same hole pattern and covers up the hole perfectly. The new mount was very easy to install and lifts the Lowrance unit just above the steering wheel, but does not block my view.
I would like to elaborate a little on my decision to install the Bass Boat Technologies mount. I’m sure all of you have watched the Bassmaster and FLW Tour events on television. We have all seen the two
