At least a group 29, but a group 31 would be better. The most important aspect is to have a fresh battery that holds it’s charge all day. New batteries rarely have any problems. As a battery ages though, the overnight charge fades earlier and earlier in the day.

When you purchase the cranking battery be sure to get one with the correct “cold cranking amps”, to start your motor, if you happen to get on a rock pile with enough fish to keep you there for four or five hours without moving and getting any charge from your big motor.

I haven’t found a way to coast start my boat when you have ten minutes to weigh-in and a seven minute run to get there.

This actually happened to me at an FLW tournament. It took me about two minutes to

remove all the cables from the closest trolling motor battery and place my big motor cables on it.

The motor fired up and I sped my way to weigh- in with about a minute to spare, too close for me! Now.

I carry a set of jumper cables; but haven’t had to use them, as I change out my starting battery more often than my trolling motor batteries.

There are so many more topics to talk about but we will save those for another issue of the WesternBass online magazine.

Keep a lookout in early 2016 for Structure Scan 3D. This is the next generation of

Structure Scan. It was announced and demonstrated at ICAST this summer.
