Westernbass Magazine - FREE Bass Fishing Tips And Techniques - Fall 2013, Page 38

This is the time of year when you’re looking for isolated rock piles, that one specific brush pile or a piece of timber that is just under the surface, that spot that is a little bit lighter or a little bit darker can be the ticket, but it doesn’t matter if you don’t know it is there. You need to be able to watch that fish stalk your bait as it follows your topwater or jerkbait or swimbait back to the boat. If it doesn’t commit, but you’ve seen it, you know where it lives and you can throw back with your follow-up bait and get it to go. If you don’t have glasses that can cut through that glare on the water, you’re not going to see the followers and you’re going to lessen the chances that you have to put that fish in the boat.

PICK A PAIR

There are a lot of good glasses out there. My choice is the Costa Del Mar with the 580 lens and the Corbina frame. (Speaking of frames - what is up with the white frames Tosh?). The 580 lens is the clearest of all lenses. Make sure the glasses you pick are polarized. Even some high dollar glasses aren’t, so make sure what you choose is. If you put on a pair of good polarized glasses, you can actually see the polarization in your windshield. You want a frame style that fits snugly to block light even from the sides, but not so tightly that it causes headache. Quality glasses have sizes and contrary to what you may tell yourself - size does matter. A 250-lb guy wouldn’t wear a small t-shirt.

pICk A color

There are seven different colors that are produced at Costa and each has been developed for varying fishing conditions. The Costa descriptions follow:

Amber: Excellent all- around lens that delivers the brightest field of vision - perfect for sight fishing

Gray: Maintains color saturation and natural contrast in medium to bright sun conditions - perfect all- around on the water choice

Sunrise: High contrast specialty lens allowing maximum light transmission - perfect in low light, to see more clearly during early morning or late afternoon

Green Mirror: Copper and amber base - perfect for fishing inshore, flats rivers and streams

Copper: Cuts glare and enhances contrast and color - perfect for sight fishing

Blue Mirror: Gray base with encapsulated mirrors deliver superior contrast and color in full sun while eliminating glare - perfect for open water

Silver Mirror: Copper base with encapsulated mirrors optimize light transmissions and enhance colors - perfect for freshwater sight fishing in variable light
