O

ne of my favorite lakes to fish anytime of the year is lake roosevelt. lake roos- evelt just outside of Payson, ariz. it has 112-miles of shoreline and 22,000 surface acres. it’s not a huge lake; but it seems to always fish big enough, with three or four tournaments in the busy summer months. The reason why lake roosevelt is being talked about in this article is because you have a chance to throw every bait in your boat and it will work here. everything works -swimbaits, topwater, spooning, punching, strolling, umbrella rigs and the list goes on. Carolina rigs, split shot, drop shot, cranks, blades and the famous Westy Worm by lobina lures. (red Westys work the best). This is a junk fisherman’s paradise! i like to get up to roosevelt as much as i can, because it helps me keep my game sharp. When i travel around the west coast fishing the Won Bass pro/am’s, lake roosevelt gives me the confidence and practice i need to go from one lake to the next. For example, making the switch from lake Mead to Clear lake is a big change, not only in tackle preparation, but the mental focus of going after totally different fish.

i feel that lake roosevelt can help any angler in these exact areas. if you’re not confident in throwing big swimbaits, they work at roosevelt. if you’re not confident in flipping a big Brush Hog with 80-lb braid in the “Jungle” Salt end, go ahead and practice that too. need to tune up your drop shot? no problem! Basically, this lake gives you a chance to throw anything you want as well as practice it and gain the confidence you need when traveling to all the different lakes. everyone always has their home lake where they fall into a rut no matter what time of the year and throw the same old things at ‘em. Well, not here.
