ow i’m not talking about the Miami Heat.
We get plenty of heat out here in the
Southwest during many months. My
uncle and father spent the early years of their fishing careers without wearing sunscreen or
protective clothing. Now, Uncle ron has a nice big
scar across his face from a melanoma that had to be
removed. My dad recently had a small one removed
from his neck as well.

The first generation of hard-core fisherman are now feeling the after effects of years and years out in the sun.
The first line of defense is a good sunscreen. Mission Skincare has an awesome line of products specifically designed for the outdoor enthusiast. Their No Sting Facestick is great for using on your forehead and around your eyes. it doesn’t drip down into your eyes once you start sweating. it’s very difficult to concentrate on the fish when your eyes are stinging. and the Mission Sun Defeated Spray keeps your hands, lures, and line from getting all messy.
Besides a great sunblock, keeping covered with clothing can be just as important . i am seeing more and more bass anglers wearing face buffs now. This
started out with the saltwater fisherman and is really catching on in the bass world. There’s hardly a day i go fishing, without wearing a face buff. There are even companies that include the face buff into the clothing. Simms Fishing and breathelikeafish.com both make long sleeve tops that have a buff built in. i use both, and it’s amazing how cool you can stay on the water, even with temps over 100 degrees.
The tops of our hands are another place that soaks up many rays . Both Simms and Dr. Glove make great sun gloves. These are very lightweight and keep your hands from looking like a beat up piece of leather.
