For instance, in brown water stay away from brown colors and go with black, orange, chartreuse and white. Something that you can see as it will give you confidence; because if you can see it, the bass can see it. if the water is clear, lighten up your color selection – grays, light greens and whites. These are rules, not facts. What makes spring fishing great is that you can throw out in clear water, the most visible color and it will catch fish. Spring bass can be very aggressive.
Spring bass fishing can be confusing and if you listen to all the dock talk and hype, which i have done, you find yourself surrounded by rods and reels on the deck of your boat. two spinner bait rods, two crank bait rods, one jig rod, two flippin’ rods, swim bait rods, and two spinning rods. The front deck of your boat looks like a game of “Pickup Sticks”. Confusing isn’t it? Well, let’s try to narrow your selection down. Get out one jig rod, 5/8-ounce, black and blue Persuader e-Chip Jig with a black and blue Berkley Chigger Craw as a trailer and one flippin’ stick with a 10-inch power worm rigged texas style with a 5/16-ounce weight. Next, get one spinnerbait rod and one spinnerbait - my favorite is ½-ounce Persuader chartreuse and white Magnum Willow with chartreuse and white blades. a Magnum Willow looks like an indiana Blade, some people call it a turtle shell blade. With this size blade and a slow retrieve you will keep this bait in the strike zone. You are also going to need a crank bait. try an ima square bill or ima Shaker in a bluegill or chartreuse color. These two baits are shallow runners. Fishing with a crank bait and keeping it shallow will catch the more aggressive fish. like the spinner bait, a slower retrieve reel will help keep the moving bait in front of the bass’ face longer. Now add a swimbait rod, tie on an optimum top of the line 5-inch bluegill or shad pattern. Both will work depending on the clarity of water. The optimum top of the line swimbait has a hook on the top and will allow you to fish the bait on the bottom, while fishing it slow, decreasing your chances of not getting hung up. Umbrella rigs, like the aBt Multi-rig system with optimum’s double diamond swim baits rigged on them can be deadly. Because you are fishing shallow water keep the jig heads weight light. The last rod has got to be the spinning rod with 8-lb test 100% trilene Fluorocarbon rigged with a drop shot or a Zappu head rigged wacky style. Use the drop shot rig with a Berkley hand poured worm in shallow or deep water. The Zappu, wacky should be fished deep just off of the breaks. Now that is more like it! You now can walk around the boat without stepping on your rods or tripping. With all of these baits, fish each and every one of them as slow as possible. it is important as a lot of big bass do not want to chase a bait too far from where they are building a nest or on a nest. No one said bass fishing is easy; however with some homework and preparation and a spring bite, Spring Fever can be rewarding.
