Winter 2026

be a key, the ones that are in the openings. Marinas with rock bank and docks, bait and bass will hold there during the colder months. I’ll use an A-rig and a trap to cover water. A dropshot in deeper water is the key near the grass edge.
WB: Do you prefer clear or muddy water?
Williams: Clear water for sure.
WB: Say you found fish and the water is clear, but once you arrive a day later and the water is now muddy. What do you do, leave or change up presentation?
Williams: If I am in my boat, I leave. If I am in my kayak, I will throw a red crankbait and a red ChatterBait. A black and blue ChatterBait or a white ChatterBait can work too. I’ll change up to find what the fish want and go with that color or lure.
WB: What would you suggest to the fellow kayak community about safety during the wintertime on the Delta?
Williams: First
and foremost, wear
a life jacket. If you
have an inflatable
life jacket, be
sure to check the
jacket that it is
maintained. I prefer
a life jacket that
does not inflate
because I just don’t
want to rely on it
working; I would
much rather have
one that will keep you afloat once you hit the water. In colder water, you can’t risk it. Make sure you have your kill switch always attached to you. Dress warm; you can always take clothes off. If you are underdressed, it may become dangerous. Have a rain suit, or even two, just in case the heater in your room is not drying your rain gear overnight. Be careful; everyone wants to make it back to their loved ones. If you see someone that looks like they need help, be sure to ask if they need help. •
