T

he winter season’s cold weather can slow the

bass bite down; however, it also can bring the

opportunity for some of the biggest bass to eat. In fact, it can be the time of year to catch a personal

best – of course, those PB windows are more limited and

are focused on the end of the winter, when the water just

starts to warm up a bit.

TIP: Some of the biggest bass – record bass – double-digit bass are caught in late winter, very early spring. When the water just hits 52 degrees, the biggest bass will start to eat in preparation as one of the limited first wave spawners. Don’t discount the first-movers advantage.

Here are two different ways we target late winter bigs.

DOWN BAIT

There are several types of jigs available for fishermen. For this time of year and this specific purpose, one of our favorite styles is the football head jig paired with a creature trailer.

you can always keep it simple in the brown/purple family. This is typically a darker, easier-to-see color for the bass, and it is a craw

imitator that can tempt a bite.

LINE: A good line choice for this would be 15-pound braided line to a 12-pound fluorocarbon leader. This pairing will help you feel more bites and have less stretch for
