Delta local Obedie Williams of Discovery Bay, Calif. has aspired to more.

GETTING THERE

“I’ve fished the Delta for 20 years and I’ve gone from not being able to catch five fish to catching a limit but not being able to catch a big fish,” said Obedie thinking back over his fishing career.

He figured that would come in time.

“I remember back when I still hadn’t caught a 10-pounder,” he said. “I would be at tournaments and see a couple of ‘em caught each time. I thought I am out here every day and I’m not getting ‘em. I didn’t know what I was doing wrong.”

WHEN THE DOUBLE D’S CAME

The bigs that had eluded Obedie for so long began to show themselves about eight years ago when he kicked off an amazing “big fish” year.

“I think it was 2014, when all of a sudden, I caught seven of ‘em, eight of ‘em and then 10 fish over 10-pounds,” he said. “My partner Clint and I went out and caught two fish for over 20 in a Tracy tournament and then went to fish the Wednesday Nighter and had two for 20-pounds that night. It was magical.”

His success with the big bass didn’t translate into a regular occurrence as he had hoped, and he had dreams of more.

“It seemed like I could get ‘em in the turkey shoots or the amateur tournaments, but in the Pro/Ams or the big tournaments, I just couldn’t get ‘em to go,” he said. “I feel like that went on for years. That those big fish wouldn’t
