Winter 2018
overdress to stay warm, bring plenty of food and water and never underestimate mother nature.
FOOTBALL JIGS FOR VEGETATION AND DROPS
Football jigs are an excellent fall bait, but transitioning to winter can pay dividends, if you downsize your meal. Instead of dragging a silicone jig, try a living rubber jig, trimmed down to the end of the hook with a smaller than normal trailer.
Better yet, buy yourself some standalone football jig heads and rig up a Yamamoto Hula Grub. The components here are basic: an unpainted jig head, a
natural colored Hula Grub (Smoke with black flake) and focus on high percentage locations. This is a perfect choice for muddy or sandy flats adjacent to vegetation.
For largemouth bass, they will live throughout winter in and around milfoil, reeds and/or weedlines on nearby drops.
For smallmouth, you can rig a 1/2 - or 1-ounce jig head and go deeper for success. The trick is detecting bites, since they are generally not as obvious as they are in other seasons. Think of a “spongy-type” of bite compared to a tap-tap.
