But, I do foresee a situation where increasing numbers of middle-aged pros bow out.
We’ve seen it with uber-competitive anglers like Davy Hite and Kevin Short who were competitive up until they left the tour, but for one reason or another no longer felt like it was worth the effort. Part of that, certainly, was financial, which likely gives another advantage to the young guys – with fewer economic obligations, and perhaps no families, they can survive on the road with minimal creature comforts for longer periods of time.
It won’t be a wholesale changeover – indeed, one of the great things about our sport is that there are no obvious impediments to participating whether you’re 18 or 80 – but as in other sports, from basketball to tennis, competency keeps on showing up in younger and younger packages. •
