to 120 fish between the three of us in the boat. We had several triple hook ups and we caught several fish in the 6- to 7-pound range. Our best five fish would have weighed about 33- to 34-pounds.”
The Grovers were not alone!
Facebook and other social media sites showcased the great fishing that most anglers experienced during the first week that the lake was open to the public.
Rick suggested that anglers visiting the lake for the first time target points, fishing baits such as jigs and big Texas-rigged worms with an up-hill retrieve. In the morning there are definitely fish shallow and willing to bite ChatterBaits, swimbaits or slow rolled spinnerbaits. He noted the lake is very clear with visibility going down 25- to 30- feet.
PRESSURE CAME QUICK
It did not take long for the Vicente bass to react to the deluge of anglers.
“I went back to the lake with the rep from Megabass on Monday, September 26 th and we only caught 35 fish with our best five weighing around 24- to 25-pounds.,” said Rick. “Responding to the pressure, the bass were a lot deeper off of main lake points; but it is still the best bass lake in San Diego and the fishing is better than anything that we have seen in a long time.”
In terms of size, Rick believes that the new San Vicente is about the same size or a little smaller than Diamond Valley Lake.
“San Vicente as a lot of long arms,” Grover said. “The lake does have quagga mussels, so anglers should re-tie as often as possible.”
WORDS OF WISDOM
The quagga mussels are thought to be down on the old waterline at levels of the old dam. It is only a matter of time before the mussels adapt to the new waterline and start appearing in the rocks and brush that line the lake.
Anglers visiting the lake without a boat have options. There are boat rentals available at the lake as well as shore fishing access.
There is no doubt that the opening of the lake has created opportunities to explore what the new San Vicente has to offer.
There are no updated topographical maps of the lake. In the coming weeks, I will be working with Navionics to offer a sonar logging event for the lake, so that anglers have access to fresh data for the lake.
As for now, anglers are exploring a whole new lake with very little data on what is under the water. What is for sure is that the bass are biting and San Vicente offered an opportunity to fish a lake with water and space to stretch your line.
