JIG

with Andy Montgomery

The jig is not flashy. It is not new. But unlike so many fly-by-night lures on the market, the jig’s results may not vary—at least, not in the hands of a capable angler that’s well versed in the right techniques and places to toss it.

Montgomery is here to teach you how to become more lethal with a jig.

Montgomery says what the jig loses in star power it more than makes up for in sheer versatility. Ask any tournament angler or savvy weekend warrior and they’ll tell you that you really can throw a jig year round.

Combined, the three techniques Montgomery is talking about could make the difference between a tough day on the water and a great day on

the water. However, each technique requires a different kind of jig—either a football, structure, or cover jig—and each jig comes with its own set of guidelines.

First up and already sailing back under the dock is a green pumpkin structure jig. Montgomery is pitching a Strike King version, the Denny Brauer Structure Jig, with a 7’6” medium heavy Daiwa Zillion rod, 7:3:1 Tatula reel and 25-lb fluorocarbon line.

“You can use a medium-heavy or a heavy rod, as long as it has a soft tip. That keeps it accurate,” he notes. “If I’m fishing shallow around isolated structure, I’m using 20- to 25-lbline. Really, I’m using 25 if I can get away with it.”
