I

t was about 11 p.m. The storm had hit and we were right in the middle of it. The wind was howling, the waves were close to 6-ft. every once in a while we would take one over the bow. i had the bilges working Nothing to do but hold on and hope. i was as nervous as a whore in church. dee? oh yeah, he was nervous too. Matter of fact, he was so nervous he started getting the sleeping bag out and laying down the chairs in the par. i asked him what he was going to do. He said, “Well hell boy, i am going to sleep.” i said, “You’re kiddin’ me, right? “No,” he laughed. “Why would i do that?” i said. “For Christ sakes dee, we’re in the middle of what could become a gale.” “Yeah,” he said. i said, “Well what if something bad happens?” He said, “Hell ray, i ain’t leavin’; i’m just going to bed.” “in this,” i asked. “Yeah,” he said, “Why not? it ain’t going no place and neither am i.”

Ray Diaz’s third installment of two buddies weathering a storm, catchin fish and makin’ memories...

So, he unrolls his sleeping bag, gets inside and goes to bed. on the other hand, i thought this was going to be Great! Now, i have two rods to watch and maybe i will be able to save a little face and catch a fish. He fell asleep in about 15 minutes and he began to snore like a freight train. Now mind you, it was very noisy in that boat with the wind, the rain, the VHF radio crackling in the back ground and through it all, there laid Thomas... sound asleep. Snoring his ass off. a soon as he fell asleep, i pulled his rod, changed his bait, pulled my rod and changed mine. i wanted fresh bait on both rods to give myself a much better chance than using old bait. My work was done and i had my chance to hang a fish. i mentioned the VHF radio. This was pretty new technology for sport fishermen. The commercial guys and the coast guard had had those radios for years; but they had just become available for us sport fishermen and mine was just chatting way. i had it on the Noaa weather station. it was scanning between the emergency channel 16 and the Noaa weather channel X2. it would give updates every few minutes
