fish. The north-end is where I won the “No Sandbaggers Tournament”.

WB: How do you catch numbers of summer bass at Clear Lake?

Matthew: I would go to tules that have at least two-feet of water in them and I would use an Owner Flashy Swimmer paired with a 4.3 or a 4.8 Keitech, cast to the farthest reaches and then bring it back through the tules.

When it gets to the heart of the summer, I’m talking like going into like August, September when the algae growth is bad. I would find docks with grass under them. The docks that extend out as deep as I can find. We have had years where we have literally caught 30 fish off of one dock on a spinnerbait.

The fish are grouped up; you just need to keep covering water until you get bit and then try and pick apart that area. And if you don’t get bit in 15 to 20 minutes, move on.

WB: What is the best

advice would you give a fellow kayak angler for summer safety?

Matthew: Visibility, if you’re fishing at night have lights, whether it’s a 360 light, which you MUST have on at night, or a handheld flashlight, a headlamp, or something else that you could turn on to signal on-coming vessels. The 360-light kind of blends into dock lights to oncoming vessels and judging distance to that light at night is rough. An air horn can be vital to your safety and don’t forget the orange flag. •
