moving, did the boat spook them, etc. I think one of the most interesting things I’ve observed with my limited time with this technology is the systematic “roaming.” As in a fish or group of fish that move between a structure, out into open water, and then back. I’m certain this applies to many more situations where we can begin to better pattern bass via their behavior.

Perhaps we have been targeting them on an isolated rock pile, dock, or piling – but, in reality they spend a majority of their time moving between there and open water, deeper water or other habitats. Our ability to observe and learn these behaviors will open up more opportunities to pattern and catch these fish opposed to getting lucky and catching them at a certain limited time and place.

Bass Reaction: Lastly, and certainly a significant change, is the ability to observe bass react to our baits and their presentation. This evolution allows us to make adjustments in real time; either through changes in presentation or to select a different bait to illicit a strike. Previously, it would take considerable process of elimination to refine patterns; now you can let the fish tell you the adjustments you need to make. Now, we can know with certainty under most any condition to make another cast, change cadence, swap baits, etc. to increase our chances to catch bass (or get frustrated as to why you can’t get that fish to bite)!

Collectively – the fundamental changes afforded by this new technology will increase efficiency in locating, patterning and catching more bass. Live sonar will certainly maximize efforts and eliminate

unproductive water. It will be interesting how anglers embrace and find new ways to utilize live sonar to improve their ability to catch fish – in particular, to locate and catch fish previously not seen. If you haven’t had the opportunity to check it out – see the main marine electronics suppliers’ websites for more info, get out in your buddies’ boat who has it, or look to invest yourself. I look forward to learning more about suspended fish, especially spotted bass in reservoirs. •
