S
ometimes targeting bass is easy. They are out
swimming along a flat looking to feed or they are
schooled up tight on a specific piece of cover and will hit anything that falls in front of them.
That can all seem to change during the summer months.
When the sun is high, and the water temperatures are
creeping up bass; especially big bass, can bury themselves in
the nastiest and thickest cover available.
They do this to seek shelter in the shade from the direct
sun overhead, as well as put themselves in prime ambush
positions to feed.

SEEKING COVER
A great way to do battle with these bass is to look for right form of cover. Some heavy cover that I’ll be looking for comes both in the form of vegetation and timber.
In terms of timber, when I’m fishing a river system, I look for log jams. These areas are typically situated in a slough that has current; thus, the log jam provides a current break for the bass to position behind.
More likely than not, the current has pushed floating vegetation into them, resulting in a nice canopy for the bass to hide under.
