When faced with bass that are buried up in cover, what is your choice in getting a bite?

head? Maybe you would you swim a

ChatterBait in the cover? I asked Big Bite pro Russ Lane the same question.

“Roll up your sleeves and go in and get them,

that is what I would do,” he answered with a smile

on his face. Last summer, I attended a writer’s

conference with Russ. I put him up to the challenge

saying, “lets hit the water and show me what would

be your plan.”

Being on the Mississippi River, it was a prime

location to pull this off; so, I jumped in his Phoenix

and we set out to put his strategy into motion.

LOOK AT LOCATIONS BEFORE YOU START

After heading down the river a few miles, Russ pulled into an area and started to idle. After a block or so, Russ eased the boat towards an area that was filled with wood cover, stacked up in the water, close to the shore. I asked what the attraction was with this area.

“To see how the current turns and pushes through,” said Russ. “This will keep the water moving and bring food to the bass as they sit in the cover. When fishing in a river, current will be a driving factor
