PLUGS
Using a topwater plug, such as a popper like a Rapala X-Pop or a walk-the-dog style bait plug, such as a Super Spook or Strike King Sexy Dawg is a great way to target bass that are actively feeding on baitfish.
Sometimes, having a lure with two or three treble hooks is a benefit as a bass will hook itself multiple times. Other times, a bass will only get one hook making the heavy plug an easy object for the bass to throw.
My go-to follow-up lure to toss after a missed fish with plugs is a wacky-rigged soft plastic stickbait. This bait can be cast far, sinks slowly and can be popped out of cover, such as rocks with ease. All of these reasons are why I like to have this bait rigged up on my deck at all times.
The other reason to have this bait rigged and ready is if when targeting smallmouth with a team partner. If your fishing partner has one hooked up and coming to the boat, many times there will be other smallmouth following that hooked fish in. Being able to quickly grab and get this bait out can result in a double for you and your partner!
Catching bass on topwater plugs is a blast, but you can garner your day
even more by having a soft plastic
stick bait ready to go.
As you are looking to target bass this summer with topwater lures, be sure and have the proper lures on hand and rigged to follow-up on missed strikes.
