really a water temperature that I am looking for to throw it. What I am looking for is the stage of the spawn that the fish are in. As soon as they are post spawn, I start throwing it. Most likely, the water is in the 60’s to 70’s during this time; but again, I am not looking for a certain temperature.

After the bass spawn, the shad spawn and when the bass are actively feeding on shad, it is time to throw this.

TARGET AREAS:

A good place to start is a main lake point. Then from there, you can fish all the way to the back of the pockets of that main lake point. You have to find where the fish are at. Are they on the points, the sides, in the backs? That just varies.

I have had times when I’ve caught them only on the main lake point and other times when they’re only at the backs of the pockets. Really, you just have to drop the trolling motor, cover a lot of water and let the fish tell you where they are at.

CAST & RETRIEVE:

I really like fishing this fast, with very few (if any) pauses. I make as long of a cast as I can and work it back to the boat, pretty fast, without variation. I want the bait to move quickly for the most action.

Because I am trying to cover a lot of water, I want to position my boat so that I can run as parallel as I can to keep my bait in the strike zone as long as I can.

If I am running shoreline, keying on 10- to 15-ft deep, I want to make that long cast and have the bait land pretty close to that depth, so that I can work it all the way back to the boat and not waste any of the cast.

ROD:

7’ MEDIUM-ACTION DAIWA TATULA XT

A medium-action is rod is softer. I want this softer Daiwa rod for hooksets and fighting the fish. With a stiffer rod, it is too easy to pull the bait out of the fish’s mouth.

The softer rod is also important because I like to

throw the Gunfish on braid and this rod can act as a

shock absorber for the braid.

REEL:

DAIWA TATULA CT TYPE-R 6.3: 1

The Tatula Type-R is my favorite reel. The CT is a little bit smaller, so it is easier to hold in your hand and it is a little bit lighter.

Of course, it has the T-Wing system. This is important because it allows for further casts. Its design of a bigger opening, has less friction during the cast, which is why it will cast further. A long cast keeps the bait in the strike zone longer. The further away (from the boat) you can cast the bait, the more likely you are going to attract a fish, get
