rockets toward the bottom, so a heavy jig head is important. A ¾-oz head also transmits better than a lighter head, so it’s easier to tell what type of hard bottom I’m fishing.
I’ve learned bass will relate to specific hard bottom areas, like a shell bed, no bigger than the size of the front deck of my boat. Once I feel my bait lose contact with the shell bed it becomes difficult to get bit, so when I’m no longer in the strike zone I reel in and make another cast.
I always want to be fishing around the fish and the heavy jig head allows me to keep my Senko on the sweet spot.
POWER GEAR
These heavy plastics demand stout casting equipment and heavy fluorocarbon line, so I rig them on a 7’6”, heavy Abu Garcia Veracity casting rod and a 7.1:1, high-speed Abu Garcia REVO SX Gen 3 casting reel spooled with 17-lb Berkley Trilene 100% Fluorocarbon line. This setup has the backbone, strength, and power to fish these heavy plastics
efficiently.
