Analyzing the habitat here and on most of the spots he hit, Hawk noted that the marina habitat was all rip rap that extended about three feet below the surface before meeting a mucky bottom. In this scenario, the fish had a very tight window in which they could feed. The water must’ve been pretty warm there – probably a little more than their liking – but fish gotta eat.

“Even though it’s August, it’s hot and those fish really should be out suspended or up underneath docks, they’re going to be right on the bank – right on the rocks,” Hawk said.

Ultimately, sticking with a crankbait probably proved to be the key decision of the day for a couple of reasons. First, with his strike zones pretty tight, Hawk was able to present a reaction bait with precision that put the potential meal right in front of the fish.

Also, the obvious abundance of white bass indicated that the largemouth were most likely preying on the little ones. Bumping a squarebill along the rocks did a good job of imitating that forage.
