Fall Movement

FALL TECHNIQUES

To cover more water, I’ll switch to a lipless crankbait after the sun has risen and the topwater bite slows. The early fall is also a great time to crank for smallmouth on the edges of the flats and along deep grasslines.

Another key bait for me in the early fall is a 1/2oz football head with a 4” Yamamoto Hula Grub in a crawfish pattern. Along with a drop-shot, this is a

great combination for probing the deep side

of rocky points after the sun is at its’

highest point.

Smallmouth bass have a well-

deserved reputation for being hard to

figure out. In the warmer months I like

to concentrate my efforts on deeper

water while focusing on the major

ingredients that produce smallmouth;

current, baitfish and deeper water.

By simplifying your approach to both

location and presentation you can ensure

that you will have success with

summertime smallies.
