O
h sweet summer time; long
days of 90-plus degree
weather means one thing
to a bass fisherman, fish- ing topwater frogs around shallow
water vegetation!
Today’s topwater frogs don’t
just hop across matted vegetation.
Developments in the available
frog styles has enabled anglers
to present the lure in a variety of
conditions – changing the retrieve
improves success in varied
situations.
MATTED VEGETATION
I’ll employ a fast retrieve when fishing across the top of the matted vegetation. My goal of this retrieve is to generate a reaction bite out of a bass. Along with covering water quickly, this allows me to identify the key areas in that vegetation that are holding a concentration of fish. My frog of choice, for this

retrieve, is the Snag Proof Bobby’s Perfect. Its wide body creates a disturbance below the vegetation that catches the bass’s eye.
