i typically like to fish this in water that is flat and glassy and calm out, especially when i need a more subtle approach. it is a good finesse bait when the fish won’t consider an aggressive bait. in this downsizing scenario, i go for 30# braided line. it doesn’t do that well in the wind; but if the wind is down, it doesn’t have any resistance and lets the bait work as intended. i like a fire tiger color in more stained water or even in crystal clear. i like anything shad or white on the bottom to emulate baby bass, carp, or catfish. i like a more natural color in clearer water or when the fish are inactive. i use a Phenix M1 Series 7’8”, medium action spinning rod, so that it is easier to control the bait and to make longer casts. You need the fast tapering action of this rod for baits that are ¼-oz or less.

TOPWATER TIPS

For years, i was fishing topwater lures focusing on mats, but now i’ve seen that over 90% of the bites come in open water near tules or in pockets. rock is probably the most overlooked area to fish. traditionally, people think of fishing flats; but if you’re targeting big fish – remember, big fish didn’t get to be big by staying shallow all the time. overall, topwater is not just a morning bite or an evening. it is more about the fish being hungry and the tide being right. Keep your eye on the tide - the big ones may feed for only a few minutes. When the water recedes, it could be a feeding frenzy; hit it right and you can do real well.

Calling the California Delta his home water, Lorenzo Rossetti has accumulated two top-5 finishes in the FLW and uncountable wins in other events on the tidal water fishery, including the 2010 WON
