s we stood outside, behind the Safeway store, watching the rain making ripples in the puddles that had formed during the few hours that it had been raining. our talk was about produce as it always was, but in short order as it always did, it turned to fishing. dee Thomas and i were produce men, but our passion was fishing. dee by this time was already a world famous bass fisherman, but his start in fishing was stripers. i was taught by dee how to fish black bass, but had not fished stripers very much. i had a full blown bass boat, but my interests now were turn- ing to the salt and bigger fish. dee had suggested that if i wanted to get into salt water fishing i should pick up a GlassPar, He said they were probably one of the best small salt water boats he had ever been in. When dee talks about fishing you had best listen; so the first time i got a chance, i purchased a SeaFairing Sunliner GlassPar. She was 19-ft and a very sea worthy boat. She had a 130 inline Mercury on her and when dee saw her he said, “Now, that’s what i’m talking about boy!” That was about two years before our conversa- tion in the rain took place.

even though i had been messing with the salt for about two years and learning everything i could learn from dee. i still needed to know much, much more about the bays. it was a slow process, but i was catch- ing on and dee was always willing to help. i had had some success in stripers and i was just as hooked as my prey. our conversation about the rain and fishing continued. dee took a long hard drag off his cigarette and said, “i bet the stripers are really going in the bay right now.” i responded, “You think?” He confirmed, “Yeah, this time of the year they get on a good night time bite and they’re usually pret- ty nice fish.” i asked him if he had heard if anyone was catch- ing and he had. He said his buddy Nish had caught a few and that he thought he could do even better. We continued the conversation, i asked where was Nish when he caught them. dee informed me he was in Suisun Bay. Suisun Bay was one of the smaller bays in the bay system and it was known for its shallow water and very nasty wind accompanied by a very nasty cross current. i knew the bay well. i had fished it many times. one thing about Suisun, when it blew hard out
